A new direction with the blog
Aug 29th
Learning. That’s what we’ve been doing the last two years, and for the last year here on this blog. We’ve been learning what it takes to develop applications on the web. We’ve been learning what it takes to start a company while holding down a 9-5, and paying attention to our wives and children. We’ve been learning how to write.
About blogging, we’ve learned a few things too. First of all, blogging is difficult. Unless you’re going to copy content it’s pretty tough to come up with original compelling material with any regularity. And writing isn’t as easy as it sounds either. Finding a voice, and making your writing interesting and witty and controversial while making sure it’s really me and is true to what we believe? Those are pretty interesting questions as it turns out. And like anything else, you need lots of reps to get good at it.
Anyway, the point of all that is that it is a preamble to this: we’re going to take a little bit of a new direction with the blog, starting with a rewrite of the pay it forward ninja series. You see, this blog is a lab for us to experiment with our ideas as much as it is a place for us to display the finished product that is our ideas. This is where we give you insight into our thoughts and the process of building this idea of foyble from the ground up- and we learned something with that series. So below are a few ways that we’ll be changing the way we blog. One of our favorite internet-types is Merlin Mann. Some of the phisolophy we are applying to this site we learned from reading him. From his essay “Better” is this quote:
What worries me are the consequences of a diet comprised mostly of fake-connectedness, makebelieve insight, and unedited first drafts of everything. I think it’s making us small. I know that whenever I become aware of it, I realize how small it can make me. So, I’ve come to despise it.
With this diet metaphor in mind, I want to, if you like, start eating better. But, I also want to start growing a tastier tomato – regardless of how easy it is to pick, package, ship, or vend. The tomato is the story, my friend. - Merlin Mann, “Better”.
How are we going to grow our tomatoes better?
1. Frequency=less. This is an act of self-preservation and attempt to improve quality. Making some kind of fake quota for posts for the blog doesn’t really serve any purpose- especially for a new blog with no discernible readership and no Vice President of SEO trying to drive traffic here every day. And I refuse to write posts simply to put words that equal search terms out here. I want people to find us, like us, join us, and join this conversation. I don’t think I need SEO for that. I think I need to write interesting stuff for that to happen. So with that eye towards quality we are taking a more long-form posting approach. Our posts will be well reasoned, thoughtful, and edited. We will research the ideas in them and cite that research. We want our work to be worthy of your time and thought-provoking. As an example, I’m looking to rewrite the ninja series and posting once every three to five weeks. So there’s no need to refresh these pages every 20 minutes. Your time and attention are important to us.
2. Visually interesting=more. If we are going to write 2,000-word mega posts once a month, I better do something to break the text up. So I’ll use a more interesting visual style with text and colors. Note: I have no idea what this will look like yet. But I promise not to try to give you a headache. If that happens it will be an accident. We are also going to try to use original content for pictures. I’m not promising that there won’t be some stock stuff here and there, but for the most part the pictures out here will be our own stuff- and that includes drawings by us. This may turn out to be an utter disaster, as I draw worse than I write. But hey original content rulz.
3. Content types=varied. I think we are going to try to do some video posts. I think. I have this flip video camera just collecting dust so I’m going try to use it to record myself and others saying things about foyble. And we have some ideas about a podcast. But now I’ve said too much and I’m overcommitting us to things we might not be able to deliver so that is all about videos and podcasts for now. But maybe we will have those things here on this blog sometimes.
This is possibly the wrong direction to take with the blog. An informal poll of my friends had us split on the issue. Some people believe that we really do need to give you a reason to come back more frequently. I would like to have content here at least once a week, but I need people to help me create it. If you are interested in contributing to this blog, or know someone who might be, please contact us. We’ll try to put the little snippets we find from around the web out on our twitter feed (foyble_org), so please follow us on that channel as well.
Thanks for your time. Please join the conversation and help us build this community. Subscribe to the blog and get ready for another go at the PIF Ninja series….
Best,
Brian, Jerry, and John.
Becoming a #payitforward Ninja #3: exploring some values and virtues of a PIF master
May 12th
Virtue. Virtues. That sounds good. What are they though? Do you know what your virtues are? First let’s figure out what our mythical #pif Ninja has for virtues and then we’ll see if there is any crossover. Afterall we do not necessarily think you have to reinvent yourself to become more Ninja-like. The whole idea is that it’s already in there somewhere. You just have to find it.
A long time ago before there was TV or frozen pizza guys with the big brains had lots of time to just think. And write. So they’d come up with big ideas and write them down. And so guys like me, and girls and guys like you, who are taking the time to read through all this stuff, had lots to say about the the traits and characteristics that make someone good, or successful, or valuble. The great thing about writing about this stuff is that it helps you understand where YOU stand on who YOU want to be. Take old Ben Franklin for example.
Ben Franklin’s 13 Virtues:
Apparently, when Ben was a youngster riding a slow boat to Philly (from London, an ~80 day trip….see what I mean about time to think) he wrote down these 13 virtues for “regulating his future conduct”. Think of it as the “Ben Franklin Mission Statement”. He based them on one of his favorite bible verses (Philippians 4:8). They included things like “frugality”, “industry”, and “justice”. The descriptions he gave the virtues included phrases like “make no expense but to do good to others or yourself, i.e., waste nothing” and “eat not to dullness and drink not to elevation” (check out the link to the article and the list of virtues in the post-script of this post). Let us not go overboard on the historical significance Ben Franklin’s personal mission statement- and let us not even go overboard on the content of his virtues. There are two things I take from his virtues that are relevant to a wannabe Ninja. First, have a plan, and stick to the plan. Actually, that’s pretty good advice for almost every situation. Even if your plan doesn’t work out, at least you’ve thought about whatever it is you are doing (living, giving a presentation, having a party) and if the wheels come off you’ll probably have a pretty good idea of when they might, and how you can react. Second, there are a few overarching themes here: Moderation (take it easy, don’t waste your money, don’t eat too much, don’t drink too much, etc). Resourcefulness (be productive, try not to waste time, make sure the stuff you do is worthy of your valuable and limited time). Kindness (almost always better than being mean). You get the idea- Ben came up with 13 things he thought were important to live the life he envisioned living. This is perhaps the best lesson: Ben Franklin had a vision of the life we wanted to have, and he prepared a roadmap to get there in the form of these virtues. Personally, I think 13 is on the high side. Maybe come up with five or ten themes you think are important.
MORE LESSONS FROM GREEKS AND CATHOLICS:
Another source for virtue inspiration are the ancient Greek philosophers (Aristotle, Plato) and later, Catholic Catechism. The Greek guys came up with four: Temperance, Wisdom, Justice, and Courage. Later, the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love (or Charity) were added, to create the concept of the Seven Heavenly Virtues. Again, what you call yours, or how you describe what is important to you is somewhat irrelevant- just check out the themes here and compare it to the three themes listed in the previous paragraph.
HAVE A PLAN. USE OUR RESOURCES TO MAKE SURE YOUR PLAN DOESN’T SUCK:
These virtues are the building blocks for your #payitforward lifestyle. You have to have an idea of what you believe in and you have to live those beliefs to really be a #payitforward Ninja. So try to think about these concepts for your life. Think about which are most important to you. Use the resources in this post to get some inspiration- click through the links to stumble around and find your own resources. Then come back next week and for all of our #payitforward Ninja series to learn some more about becoming the ultimate #pif Ninja. Remember: have a plan, and try to make sure your plan doesn’t suck. Happy Mothers Day!
May 5th
As I left the house this morning I saw this little beauty sitting on
our front porch. It seems that our neighbors Ed and Mary slipped a
little gift for my wife for Mothers Day inside our front door last
night.
It made ME happy so I’m sure my wife will LOVE it!
What moms in your life can you surprise with a little pick-me-up like
this? Think about it!
Thanks Ed and Mary!

May 3rd
On May 1 and 2, 2010, Middle Tennessee was hit with the greatest amount of rainfall in its recorded history. Photographer Michael Deppisch created the following video which, as you will see, is a supremely moving account of the destruction.
If this video moved you at all like it did us here at foyble HQ, then please consider visiting the Middle Tennessee Red Cross Chapters site and making a donation to help.

Support the Letter Carriers Food Drive
Apr 30th
Support the Letter Carriers Food Drive, originally uploaded by foyble.
I came in to work today to this little present on my desk. What do we
have here? The National Association of Letter Carriers urging me to
“stamp out hunger” by using this bag to bring non-parishable food
items to work May 3-7. Who is the national association of letter
carriers? Frankly I have no idea-that’s what google is for. If you
figure it out leave a link in the comments.

Friday foybles: Pets without parents (updated)
Apr 30th
Note: the Friday foyble of the week (FFOTW) is a once per week post where we single out one of our favorite foybles from the many over at www.foyble.com. We don’t have any criteria for the foybles we pick- it’s pretty random. Email us at contact@foyble.com to nominate someone for the honor!
This weeks Friday foyble comes to you courtesy of user Gabi Ragusa. Pets without parents is an organization that Gabi has volunteered to work for- one that she clearly cares about, based on her other foybles and the fact that she has committed to them by going through an orientation process.
Pets without parents (www.petswithoutparents.net) is “no-kill, non-profit shelter for dogs and cats located in the Clintonville area of Central Ohio.
I wanted to draw some attention to this foyble not because of the act, but because of Gabi’s profile. She is setting such a wonderful example for her friends, peers, and family. She has logged 16 foybles on the site- many of them with the same theme. She clearly likes to help animals, and she likes to help hungry people around the world.
This little glimpse into Gabi’s life is one of the things I love about foyble- you see these 16 acts of goodwill she committed and you know that she is a generous and principled person. And this gets to one of the things I feel strongly about in regards to social media. Of all the things you can choose to share with *literally* the entire world, these types of stories seem like a no brainer to me. If you go to an average person’s profile on the the standard-issue social media site, you’re generally going to immediately know things like their favorite book and their political affiliation. But why would you want a stranger to know that about you immediately?
One of questions we get all the time about the site is about “bragging” about the things that people do. Some people are uncomfortable with this notion- they often say that it seems narcissistic to them. But I think I point them to Gabi’s profile page with her list of foybles and honestly say that it never even occurred to me that Gabi is all wrapped up in herself. Her stories are an inspiration to me! We hope you feel the same way- please take a moment to check her profile out and consider learning more about the causes she has devoted her time to!
Thank you very much for being a part of our community Gabi. You certainly deserve more, but here’s your internet high five all the same. Boom. Update: I donated to pets without parents!
