A new direction with the blog
Aug 29th
Learning. That’s what we’ve been doing the last two years, and for the last year here on this blog. We’ve been learning what it takes to develop applications on the web. We’ve been learning what it takes to start a company while holding down a 9-5, and paying attention to our wives and children. We’ve been learning how to write.
About blogging, we’ve learned a few things too. First of all, blogging is difficult. Unless you’re going to copy content it’s pretty tough to come up with original compelling material with any regularity. And writing isn’t as easy as it sounds either. Finding a voice, and making your writing interesting and witty and controversial while making sure it’s really me and is true to what we believe? Those are pretty interesting questions as it turns out. And like anything else, you need lots of reps to get good at it.
Anyway, the point of all that is that it is a preamble to this: we’re going to take a little bit of a new direction with the blog, starting with a rewrite of the pay it forward ninja series. You see, this blog is a lab for us to experiment with our ideas as much as it is a place for us to display the finished product that is our ideas. This is where we give you insight into our thoughts and the process of building this idea of foyble from the ground up- and we learned something with that series. So below are a few ways that we’ll be changing the way we blog. One of our favorite internet-types is Merlin Mann. Some of the phisolophy we are applying to this site we learned from reading him. From his essay “Better” is this quote:
What worries me are the consequences of a diet comprised mostly of fake-connectedness, makebelieve insight, and unedited first drafts of everything. I think it’s making us small. I know that whenever I become aware of it, I realize how small it can make me. So, I’ve come to despise it.
With this diet metaphor in mind, I want to, if you like, start eating better. But, I also want to start growing a tastier tomato – regardless of how easy it is to pick, package, ship, or vend. The tomato is the story, my friend. - Merlin Mann, “Better”.
How are we going to grow our tomatoes better?
1. Frequency=less. This is an act of self-preservation and attempt to improve quality. Making some kind of fake quota for posts for the blog doesn’t really serve any purpose- especially for a new blog with no discernible readership and no Vice President of SEO trying to drive traffic here every day. And I refuse to write posts simply to put words that equal search terms out here. I want people to find us, like us, join us, and join this conversation. I don’t think I need SEO for that. I think I need to write interesting stuff for that to happen. So with that eye towards quality we are taking a more long-form posting approach. Our posts will be well reasoned, thoughtful, and edited. We will research the ideas in them and cite that research. We want our work to be worthy of your time and thought-provoking. As an example, I’m looking to rewrite the ninja series and posting once every three to five weeks. So there’s no need to refresh these pages every 20 minutes. Your time and attention are important to us.
2. Visually interesting=more. If we are going to write 2,000-word mega posts once a month, I better do something to break the text up. So I’ll use a more interesting visual style with text and colors. Note: I have no idea what this will look like yet. But I promise not to try to give you a headache. If that happens it will be an accident. We are also going to try to use original content for pictures. I’m not promising that there won’t be some stock stuff here and there, but for the most part the pictures out here will be our own stuff- and that includes drawings by us. This may turn out to be an utter disaster, as I draw worse than I write. But hey original content rulz.
3. Content types=varied. I think we are going to try to do some video posts. I think. I have this flip video camera just collecting dust so I’m going try to use it to record myself and others saying things about foyble. And we have some ideas about a podcast. But now I’ve said too much and I’m overcommitting us to things we might not be able to deliver so that is all about videos and podcasts for now. But maybe we will have those things here on this blog sometimes.
This is possibly the wrong direction to take with the blog. An informal poll of my friends had us split on the issue. Some people believe that we really do need to give you a reason to come back more frequently. I would like to have content here at least once a week, but I need people to help me create it. If you are interested in contributing to this blog, or know someone who might be, please contact us. We’ll try to put the little snippets we find from around the web out on our twitter feed (foyble_org), so please follow us on that channel as well.
Thanks for your time. Please join the conversation and help us build this community. Subscribe to the blog and get ready for another go at the PIF Ninja series….
Best,
Brian, Jerry, and John.
Need inspiration to GIVE? Look no further than this video on the flooding in Tennessee
May 3rd
On May 1 and 2, 2010, Middle Tennessee was hit with the greatest amount of rainfall in its recorded history. Photographer Michael Deppisch created the following video which, as you will see, is a supremely moving account of the destruction.
If this video moved you at all like it did us here at foyble HQ, then please consider visiting the Middle Tennessee Red Cross Chapters site and making a donation to help.

Massive Earthquake in Haiti. Here’s how you can help.
Jan 13th
An earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter Scale rocked Port-Au-Prince, Haiti collapsing buildings and killing untold thousands yesterday. You can read more on the earthquake on every news outlet anywhere, so pick your favorite.
What’s important for us, is how you can start committing foybles to help this impoverished nation in the very long road to getting back on their already fragile feet.
foyble co-founder John Frazier supports a missionary in Haiti that builds schools and health clinics. You can find them at www.lifeline.org.
An article from The Huffington Post via Yahoo shares several ways that you, (YES YOU!), can help the people of Haiti. You can make a difference whether you donate $1.00 or $10,000 or more. You can also donate supplies. Here are their ideas and they are all foybles for you:
•The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake. They expect to provide immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. They are accepting donations through their International Response Fund.

10 foybles in 10 days
Sep 27th
Inspired by christianpf.com we here at foyble will be performing 10 foybles in 10 days- one per day for the first 10 days of October. Join us! We’ll update you via twitter (follow us here) and right here on the blog. We have set up a 10 day give group on foyble.com- we’ll connect all of our 10 day give foybles to that group. If you participate, please do the same! Read a story on the 10 day give here too.
The 10 day give culminates in our booth at the Columbus Italian Festival. If you’re in Columbus check out the fest and be sure to stop by the foyble booth.
Consider joining us for the 10 day give. Since we have a few days until October 1st you have some time to plan ahead for this event, maybe you can “schedule” a few good deeds ahead of time. Here are some ideas for you (don’t forget you can browse over 100 foybles on foyble.com for inspiration):
1. Bake some bread for your neighbors like Chad and Lynn did.
2. Buy three $5 giftcards to your favorite coffee shop and give one away each day to friends or family.
3. Do something nice for your work colleagues- bring some bagels in, offer to help someone out if they seem stressed out, consider letting your team out a little early on a nice day next week. Think of something that might be relevant to your work or industry that might resonate.
4. You don’t have to spend money on the GIVE- resolve each day to do something completely random based on some interaction you have during the day. Keep your eyes, your mind, and your heart open to helping someone. Like this gal or these guys did.
5. Pick 10 charities and give a small donation to each every day. You can find charities associated with foyble here. Don’t be afraid to give small donations to charities. They all add up. If you can’t afford to give money to your favorite charity try giving them time. Contact them and see what they’ve got going on next week.
No act is too small. Don’t be intimidated by the 10 day give. If you’re having a crazy day or you’re tired or you simply forget just spend an hour complimenting as many people as you can. Keep that energy up and the good vibes flowing.
So follow us on twitter (@foyble_org), check out this blog, and look for new 10 day give posts connected to the 10 day give group on foyble.com.
Thanks!

Foyble, Canadian Style.
Sep 26th
I read this story by Chris Parry of the Vancouver Sun on the world wide interweb today and it’s a prime time example of foybles in action! School kids at Cindrich Elementary School in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, were charged with the task of spreading random acts of kindness (that’s what a foyble is, but you knew that!). Teachers inspired the kids and “Quietly, unobtrusively, these children began to weave their magic. ”
Kids passed out homemade cookies, helped kids on the playground, and wrote kind notes for kids’ school bags. Asking only that the goodwill be passed on (foyble-riffic!), the movement became contagious. The small acts like cookies lead to bigger ones like sponsoring Make a Wish Foundation kids. One class created “30 Random Acts of Kindness Cards” that asked recipients to pay it forward.
You should read the rest of the article. It’s uplifting, relevant, and will put a smile on your face and warm your heart. No doubt. I hope those kids, teachers, and the ones they touched find their way to foyble.com and share all of their amazing stories of the GIVE with us here in foyble-land!

Starting the GIVE keeps employees engaged and grows business, Harvard research says.
Sep 24th
Harvard Business Publishing posted this great article about how, on many levels, employees want to “do good” (we call it Start the GIVE) and its makes their employers more successful. That’s all win-win, foyble style. Here’s what they had to say:
“New research shows that high-potential employees are motivated by a desire to give back to their communities, and increasingly seek out employers that allow them to do so on the job. Companies like GE and Pfizer are launching programs that expand their revenue and attract and retain these employees by integrating “doing good” into their business strategies. Don’t limit your company’s socially responsible efforts to donation and volunteering. Explore ways that your company can combine social responsibility and commercial viability by offering lower cost products to emerging markets or developing a new profitable solution to a social problem.”
-This tip was adapted from an article by Sylvia Ann Hewlett that you can read below. Whether you are an employee or an employer, on behalf of yourself or a company, make sure you use foyble and tell us how we can make your experience better not only to Start the GIVE but to continue the GIVE and watch it grow!
